In the article "New Study Finds Electric Vehicles Are Driven Less Than Gas Cars," GW Today covered the findings from one of the largest studies on EV mileage to date conducted by Engineering Management and Systems Engineering professor John Helveston and co-authors Lujin Zhao, Eliese Ottinger, and Arthur Hong Chun Yip. Published in Joule, the study, “Quantifying Electric Vehicle Mileage in the United States,” showcases that EV owners drive fewer miles than owners of gas vehicles.

Here is an excerpt from the article: “People often assume that buying an EV is good for the environment, and it generally is, but the impacts scale with mileage,” said John Helveston, study co-author and assistant professor of engineering management and systems engineering at GW. “Our study shows that the current generation of EV owners aren’t using them as much as gas cars. For maximum impact, we need the highest-mileage drivers behind the wheel of EVs rather than low-mileage drivers.”
