About
THINKING ABOUT WHAT MATTERS: Our faculty care about the important challenges of our time and about preparing the next generation of engineering leaders. Together, we work to understand these challenges and develop engineering tools to solve them.
Who we are and what we do
In our academic programs, the EMSE department prepares engineers to succeed in research and practice, equipped with the tools to understand the technologies that are being developed and the rapidly changing context in which these technologies will be applied, through innovative cross-disciplinary programs. In our research, we study complex, interconnected systems of all kinds -- such as the power grid, the internet, vaccination campaigns, and space missions -- to build knowledge that helps to solve societal problems.
Welcome
On behalf of the Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering (EMSE), I welcome you to our website and invite you to learn about the exciting academic and research activities of EMSE students and faculty. We take pride in our tight-knit, inclusive community and the unparalleled opportunities afforded by studying here in the heart of Washington, D.C. As you browse this website or our brochure, you will find that the EMSE Department provides a great variety of opportunities for students at all levels to be involved with faculty and other students working on some of society’s most important problems.
Academics: The Department offers undergraduate, masters, PhD, and DEng degrees, many of them in multiple formats including online and in-person to suit the needs of different learners. In addition, we offer multiple paths to engage with us outside of a degree context, such as undergraduate minors and graduate certificates. Many of these short credentials can be combined toward other degrees.
Research: Our EMSE faculty conduct cutting-edge systems research across a wide range of engineering and socio-technical systems domains, and we receive prestigious research grants from agencies including NSF, NASA, NIH, DARPA, USAID, DoE and many others. Nestled between the White House and the State Department, we naturally engage in research that aims to have a positive impact on society and are regularly featured in news outlets or invited to advise senior decision-makers. Graduate students are a core component of EMSE research, and many undergraduate students get involved in research early in their programs
Community: We are a tight-knit community in a world-class city. Our small classes foster close connections with faculty and classmates who will grow into your academic family. And at the same time, GW’s location in the heart of Washington, D.C. will provide you with unparalleled research, internship, and cultural opportunities.
If these pages leave any questions unanswered, please reach out to me or any of our faculty and staff. We welcome the opportunity to help you explore if an EMSE degree is right for you.
