Dr. Erica Gralla has received a two-year, $147,150 National Science Foundation grant for her project "Collaborative Research: Observing, Analyzing, and Modeling Design Team Problem Decompositions in Facility Design." Working under the grant, she and her co-PI, Jeffrey Herrmann of the University of Maryland, will investigate how engineers decompose and solve facility design problems. They will observe teams of industrial engineers as they redesign a manufacturing facility, and then model their strategies to determine better problem decompositions and design processes.
