In an invited presentation with GW’s Sigur Center for Asian Studies, Associate Professor of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering John Helveston delivered a talk on the barriers hindering the American electric vehicle (EV) transition. In his talk, “China’s Challenge The American EV Transition: Looking Ahead While Lagging Behind China,” Helveston focuses on the differences between U.S. and Chinese EV industries specifically and the mechanisms that have made Chinese EV companies so successful.
Here is an excerpt from the presentation: “Why are Chinese companies so good at this and not the multinationals? Why isn’t it that Volkswagen, GM, and Toyota are leading China’s EV industry? Why is it Chinese companies? That’s a harder question, and my answer to this is institutions.”
