In an op-ed for Tech Policy Press, “Building Trust Infrastructure for Agentic AI,” Chris Riley, executive director of the Data Transfer Initiative, explores the risks of emerging agentic artificial intelligence (AI) platforms and how to build trust in them. He references a recent Substack post by GW Engineering’s David Broniatowski, which details four perspectives on what trust in an AI ecosystem means to further examine the public’s lack of trust in agentic AI.

Broniatowski articulates four separate views on trust: technocratic, in which trust is a metric to optimize; relational, emergent through social cohesion and structure; pragmatic, built on institutions and established practices; and critical, viewing trust through the lens of political and/or economic power. Through this lens, the trust gap in agentic AI I’ve been describing is pragmatic.”
